Editor’s Note: Inspired by our founder Ali Jarvis’ “lemon” dog, Luc, this series is dedicated to local, special-needs pups who are looking for loving furever homes. Please consider sharing this post — you might help Sampson from Doberman Rescue Minnesota find his!
______________

Foster’s Name: Sonya

______________
SWD: Tell us about this handsome gent!
DRM: Sir Sampson is a sweet and very gentle dog. He can be a little silly and a lot snuggly; this boy loves everyone and everything, except for squirrels — they drive him a little crazy — but maybe that’s love, too! Sampson is a smart fella, and very obedient. He just lives to please.
SWD: And what’s Sampson’s favorite thing to do?
DRM: He loves a good romp in the yard, especially with doggie pals. And Sampson just can’t resist chasing squirrels (he says they tease him relentlessly!). He likes going for walks, too, which helps to strengthen and stretch his legs.
SWD: What is his special need?
DRM: Sampson had wobbler syndrome, a condition that caused the vertebrae in his neck to put pressure on his spinal cord. This was corrected with a successful surgery at the U of MN this past January, and although he does have some lingering nerve damage, Sampson has improved dramatically (and should continue to do so!) His gait is still a bit slow and he stumbles occasionally going down stairs, but that doesn’t stop him from having fun. Another neurological issue that may be related is that he sometimes (maybe once a week) has a BM without realizing it. Regular potty times will help, as will a quick and covert cleanup. (Our dapper dobie gets rather embarrassed by an out-of-the-blue poo.)
SWD: Till you’ve walked a mile in a pup’s pawprints, right? On a lighter note, tell us something about Sampson that makes you smile.
DRM: Almost anything about him — Sampson radiates happiness! He is a true velcro Doberman, and loves to be with people. He also entertains himself by playing with his toys alone; it’s so cute to watch him give them a good toss up in the air. He is always full of joy and is an absolute love.
SWD: What would make an ideal home for Sampson?
DRM: Sampson would be happy and do well with people of all ages, including children. He’d love to live with other dogs; he’d be just fine with cats. Because he is still improving and gaining strength, Sampson would do best with minimal stairs/steps. He can do one or two, but a single-level home (or a home where he could live on one level, including access to the outside) would be ideal. He’d also love a fenced yard to hang out in — with, of course, a few squirrels to run after!
